July 16th. We left early, first stop was Dutch Brothers to use our coupon for a two fer one.
Set up at Amacher Park in Roseburg, OR. This is an old County Park, been upon since the 40's, long before I-5 went over it.
Mike rode in from Las Vegas. We didn't know him, but got well acquainted. He's riding a 750 Magna, and pulled a very loaded trailer he made himself.
A retired steelworker, Mike is very handy. Here he's showing me this small butane stove he carries when he doesn't want to take time for a campfire.
He makes all his meals in camp. Saves left over breakfast food for lunch. He carried lots of extra gas cans, so when he finds a good deal he can fill up and not have to visit a station for longer times.
Packed and ready to leave. He's headed to Redding, CA. His father is buried there, and he'll stop to pay his respects. Forecast is 108 degrees later today where he's going.
Bob and Ronda arrive from Salem, and set up right under I-5, next to the Railroad track. Old highway 99 was on the other side of the track. Also, next to them was a 4 family camp with a lot of kids. They were pretty heavy drinkers, but only stayed up until daylight the next day
Pat's brother, Richard had camped up the Umpqua River last night. He joined us this morning for breakfast and the ride South. Here, we're at the Seven Feather's Casino Truck Stop. On the way out, Richard's GPS fell off the bike, and Ronda dropped her sunglasses! Everything turned out all right anyway. The truck behind the bikes spells Acord wrong :-)
Schroeder Park in Grants Pass, Oregon (my home town). Karen and Preston are recovering from the hot ride over from Coos Bay. We're just getting set up in camp.
Karen buying firewood from the camp host. It's about a hundred degrees, but we need wood for hot dogs and marshmallows etc.
Richard is checking out the "Alice Packed" food from his ice chest. She does a fine job of taking care of him, even when she's not there.
Decoration on one of the Kwik Kamps.
Nice touch by the campground. This is another old Josephine County Park. It's nicely kept up, and in a great location. We saw these painted rocks on our walk to the river.
Karen and Ronda looking at a Blue Heron.
And there he is, on the other side of the river. Big Zoom here with the camera.
The mighty Rogue! Tomorrow we'll be riding all the way to it's head waters up at 7300 feet in the high Cascade mountains.
Getting ready for the Saturday breakfast and ride.
Back in 1964 this place was for sale, and...it was almost mine. But........that's another long story!
One of the fireplaces inside the Union Creek Lodge. The inlays are all petrified wood.
Picture on the wall is Union Creek..below here, it's the Rogue River.
Rushing water of Union Creek.
If there is water anywhere near, Karen will be in it!
Dueling cameras! Ronda is taking our picture.
It was a great ride up to Crater Lake. The parking lot, give shop, restaurant and Lodge have changed a LOT since I was here last. Here's part of the new parking lot. Richard is checking out our bikes.
The sign says, "Stay on the walkways". Of course, Karen has to leap the rock wall for a closer look of the lake.
Bob was born a little over a hundred miles from here (as the crow flies), but this is the first time he's ever seen the lake. He used to drive log truck all around the South Coast forests, but just never made it to this spot before. He wasn't disappointed.
Wizard Island. Even though the facility changes some every year, the lake looks just the same as it has for hundreds of years.
Pat and I stayed up on top while the rest walked down to this view point. I'm above them with the camera zoomed in.
Ronda and Bob look like they are having a serious discussion!
The Bistro in Gold Hill. We had an EXCELLENT breakfast here! Actually 2 days in a row. Karen left her phone there Saturday morning. The owner called the last number dialed on the phone, it was our friend Ruth. She gave them Preston's cell number, so he called and found us still in camp. So, we returned Sunday for another one of their good breakfasts and to pick up the phone.
Even there there has been unseasonably hot weather up here at over 7200 feet, there is still a lot of snow piles still around.
Back in camp, Bob is pontificating again!
Richard (Pat's brother) spent the weekend camping with us, he knows how to get comfortable in camp. He carried a LOT of stuff in his Kwik Kamp.
A week early, but we won't all be together for Karen's birthday, so we had an early celebration. Seems like last year the 6 of us were camped out a hundred some miles North of here in Cottage Grove.
Sunday morning, Ronda was in the Minnie getting coffee, she picked up my camera and took this picture of Julie..She was just waking up from her night in our down comforter. Weighing less than 3 pounds, we have to be careful not to squash her during the night!
The "pack up" day. Richard is heading to the Coast and will go down Hwy 101 to his home in Hidden Valley Lake, CA, Preston & Karen are heading to the Coast to go back to Coos Bay. It's going to be hot on I-5 again today, so they ended up freezing on the way home. Bob and Ronda will head North to Salem. Pat and I will haul the Blue Wing up to Tumwater, Washington.
We had the detour to Gold Hill to get Karen's camera. No one minded, it was such a good place to eat. Here, we stopped just south of the town of Rogue River. On the bank of Birdseye Creek is this home. It was the site of one of the last battles of the Rogue Indians. The walls are very thick to withstand bullets and arrows. The people living here used to wear helmets like these to ward off tomahawks during attacks.
Some nice steel work. this was probably added after the house was built in 1853. Someone is living in the house now, but it's on the historical register, and is in the process of being restored.
Old Dove tail construction on the outside walls. From what I've heard, there is some kind of heavy insulation, then another inside wall to stop bullets.
I'll add here that the trip home was interesting. Bob and Ronda went on ahead of us, since we stopped at 7 Feathers to drop off some Visitor Magazines. They made it to exit 243 on I-5 when the Bob's Wing stopped. We caught up with them and took the battery out of Blue Wing, then followed them home and changed batteries back. Pat and I then gassed up in Salem, terrible mileage because of a strong headwind. We went on up to a rest area just South of our Destination. the picture is inside the Offut Lake Resort.
I loved these colorful florers!
The lodge and some of the buildings were built in 1939, and was called Ada's Lodge. There are still some of the older cabins, and newer ones like these. And nice RV spots. There is a road between the main camping area and the lake, but there are tent spots done by the lake too.
There is this swimming dock, a nice fishing pier and several boats that you can rent. They all have electric trolling motors on them. the lake has a lot of rainbow trout in it.
An old fireplace. I didn't take any pictures of the rustic old lodge by the river, don't know how that go by me.
The General Store is part of the Resort. They have a Chuckwagon dinner on the weekends, and entainment in the park on most weekends. It's a very nice and friendly place.
Looks like the wind got the best of a pink Flamingo and the fence. this was my favorite trailer in the park. (probably the oldest and smallest to:-)
Lots of flowers in the little Resort. I like these yellow ones the best.
We dropped off Blue Wing at the painter's shop this morning. He told us about this place, recomended that we come here, and we're glad we did. Has all the thinks we like, except we can't get a good phone signal here. Otherwise, everything is great. Weather was perfect, about 82 with a light breeze today.
